Even if you only travel with us occasionally, it soon becomes cheaper to have a pay-as-you-go card than to buy single tickets. You can then load your card with between 100 and 1500 sek.
Buy a card
The first time you buy a card, you pay a refundable deposit of 50 sek. This can then be used as a buffer if at any time there is too little money on your card. Buy your card here. The refundable deposit can be paid back as cash or into your bank account, but the money loaded onto your card cannot.

You are classed as a youth and travel at a reduced rate until you reach the age of 20. Children under the age of 7 travel free of charge when accompanied. Children of 6 years of age and above may travel alone but must have their own ticket or card.

Top up your card
You can top-up (add money to your card account) as you like in steps of 100 sek. If you top up at one of our points of sale, keep your receipt until you see that the card has been topped up correctly. You can have up to 1500 sek on the card. You can also Auto top-up your card directly in My Pages, here on the website.

How to pay on board
If you are travelling within a zone, do as follows:
Hold your card against the blue or the yellow card reader, or the black one by the driver. You will hear a beep. Finished!

The change time within a zone is 90 minutes from when you first checked in your card. When you travel across zone boundaries, the 90 minute change time runs from when you check out your card in the new zone.
If you continue your journey into another zone, you will have 90 minutes in the zone when you check out. This applies as long as there is no more than 180 minutes from the first check in to the last check out.
How much does a journey cost?
The easiest way of working out what your journey will cost is to go to our travel planner and search for your journey. Then click the Fare button to find out the cost. If no price is displayed for pay-as-you-go, this means that you cannot use your pay-as-you-go card for this journey. This mainly applies to train journeys that are not made by Västtågen.
