Västtrafik has its own trains, called Västtågen, on which all of our tickets are of course valid. But you can also travel with other train companies in Västra Götaland with our tickets and cards. Different rules then apply for the types of ticket or card that can be used.
Västtågen is a collaboration between Västtrafik, Hallandstrafiken and Jonköpings Länstrafik. This is very beneficial since it means that your ticket or card can also be used at your destination, and that you can change easily between the train and the local public transport. You can choose to use a single ticket, pay-as-you-go card or period card; they are all valid.
Swedish State Railways (SJ)
We have a working agreement with SJ and other train companies, and if you travel with them your Västtrafikkort can be combined with other tickets and used for partial payment. But the regulations vary somewhat from line to line.

We have a partnership with Tågab, so that you can use your Västtrafik period card when you travel with them. Pay-as-you-go cards are not valid. Single tickets are sold by Tågab.

Öresundståg is the collective name for the rail services in southern Sweden and from there over to Denmark. Öresundståg is jointly run by Blekingetrafiken, Hallandstrafiken, Länstrafiken Kronoberg, Kalmar Läns Trafik, Skånetrafiken, Västtrafik and the Danish Transport Authority. The lines are operated by DSDFirst (and SJ on the Alvesta-Kalmar stretch). This cooperation means that the same ticket and fare apply to the whole trip, from Gothenburg in the north to Kalmar in the east and Denmark in the south-west. Västtrafik period cards are valid between Gothenburg and Kungsbacka. You can also use Västtrafik cards and tickets as part payment on board Öresundstågen.

You can travel on NSB trains with a period card but not with a pay-as-you-go card. Single tickets can be bought on the NSB website.

On-board SJ Snabbtåg (express)
Only the Regionen Runt Extra card can be used on SJ Snabbtåg and Intercity; no other Västtrafikkort or Västtrafik tickets are valid. If you are travelling with young children, you must book seats for them also. You can do this via SJ and at no extra charge for these seats.
Do young children travel for free?
On SJ, Tågab and NSB, two children can travel with you at no extra cost when you show a valid Västtrafikkort or Västtrafik ticket. In this context, this applies to a child travelling before June 30 on the year of their sixth birthday. (Unfortunately, this does not apply if you have a School Card or Military service card.)
