General information

As a pupil in compulsory school or upper secondary school, you can travel on weekdays with a school card. It is the respective municipality or school that decides which students are entitled to free travel to school. The card states which academic year it applies to and which ticket type it is loaded with. It can be one or more ticket types.

Check that the name and social security number are correct if it is printed on the card, and write your signature on the back. Remember to always have your school card with you and show it to the ticket reader at the driver every time you travel!

School card

The school card is valid weekdays, Monday to Friday from 04:00 to 19:00 during the following periods:

  • 10 August to 23 December
  • 7 January to 18 June
  • School tickets for the school year are also active weekdays during autumn break, sports holidays and Easter holidays
  • The school card is also valid on weekdays during the coming autumn term, 10 August to 15 September. Therefore, do not forget to save your school card for the autumn term!

Leisure card

Our leisure tickets work as an extended ticket and are used as an addition to your regular school card. All leisure tickets are valid in Zones A, B and C (including Koster). If you are travelling with vehicles that do not have our card readers, you will need to present a proof of validity. You can get a certificate of validity from a sales agent or in a Västtrafik store.

If you have a leisure charge on your school card, one of the following is printed on the card. The information refers to the times when the leisure charging applies:

  • Zone ABC Leisure weekdays 19–22 (Valid on autumn, sports, and Easter holidays)
  • Zone ABC Leisure weekdays 14–24 (Valid on autumn, sports, and Easter holidays)
  • Zone ABC Leisure weekdays 14–24 and weekends 00–24 (Valid on autumn, sports, and Easter holidays)
  • Zone ABC Leisure weekdays 14–24 and weekends/holidays 00–24 (Valid on autumn, sports, and Easter holidays)
  • Zone ABC Leisure Christmas / summer holidays 00–24 (Only valid on Christmas and summer holidays)
    - Christmas break: 15 December – 15 January
    - Summer holidays: 1 June to 31 August.

Summer holiday card

It is the municipalities in the Västra Götaland region that order summer holiday cards. If you receive a summer holiday card during the spring term, it is only valid on the following summer holidays. For example, Zone ABC Fritid Christmas Holiday/Summer Holidays 00-24 2023/2024 is valid during the Christmas holidays 2023 and the summer holidays 2024. This means that if you receive the card in the spring semester, it is only valid for the coming summer holidays.

The summer holiday card is valid in Västtrafik's zones A, B and C (including Koster). This does not apply on routes that cross county borders or for onward travel in the respective neighboring county.

  • You can travel around the clock with the card from 1 June until 31 August.
  • The card is not valid during the Christmas holidays.
  • For trips with vehicles that do not have our card readers, proof of validity needs to be presented. A certificate of validity can be obtained from a sales agent or in a Västtrafik store.

Wrap zones

As of 14 August 2023, around a hundred stops in Mölnlycke urban area, Kungälv urban area and Ale södra belong to both zones A and B. We call the areas wrap zones. This means that if you have a school card for zone A, you can also travel in the new wrap zones with your school card.

If you have a school card for zone B, you can continue to travel within zone B and in the new wrap zones. If you live in Kungälv, Mölnlycke or Ale and go to school in zone B, your school card is not valid for trips to zone A.

Stops that are close to a zone boundary belong to a wrap zone. This means that the stop belong to two zones. The school card must have the same zone affiliation as the stop where the journey takes place.

Example: Hulebäcksgymnasiet stop
The stop at Hulebäcksgymnasiet is part of a wrap zone and belongs to zone A and zone B.

A student living in zone A can use his/her school card (valid in zone A) to travel to Hulebäcksgymnasiet as if the stop belongs to both zone A and zone B. A student living in zone B can use their school card (valid in zone B) to travel to Hulebäckgymnasiet, which belongs to zone A and zone B, but the school card is not valid for travel further into zone A.
