School year ticket

  • With a School year ticket, students can travel during non-holiday weekdays between 04:00 – 19:00.
  • The information about which zone the school ticket is valid for is printed on the front side.
  • School year ticket is valid during the first two weeks of the next academic year between August 10 and September 15 pending the issuing of a new card.
  • The ticket cannot be used to cover a part of SJ or Vy ticket cost.
  • Students cannot travel by Öresundståg with a school ticket that is valid only within Zone B, see also Västtrafik tickets from other train companies in Price Manual.
  • While traveling by vehicles unequipped with our card readers, students need to be able to show a certificate of validity. A certificate of validity can be obtained from a Västtrafik shop or an agent.

School year ticket Extra

  • With School year ticket Extra, students can travel within the valid zone, but also to an adjacent county between 04:00 and 19:00
  • School year ticket Extra is valid in several zones plus an adjacent county.
  • For trips with vehicles unequipped with our card readers, certificate of validity must be shown. A certificate of validity can be obtained from a sales representative or a Västtrafik shop.

School year ticket Mini

  • School year ticket Mini applies to non-holiday weekdays between 04:00 and 19:00, August 10 – December 23 and January 7 – June 18.
  • School year ticket Mini is also valid during the first two weeks of the following semester between August 10 and September 15 pending the issuing of a new card.
  • School year ticket Mini is active during the autumn holiday, the sports break and the Easter holiday.
  • School year ticket Mini applies to trips within the towns of Borås, Trollhättan/Vänersborg, Skövde or Uddevalla.
  • While traveling by vehicles unequipped with our card readers, students need to be able to show a certificate of validity. A certificate of validity can be obtained from a Västtrafik shop or an agent.

Leisure ticket (Skolkort Fritid)

There are five different Leisure tickets that students can travel with whenever the regular School year ticket does not apply:

  • Zone ABC Fritid 1 läsår vardag 19-22 (Invalid during school holidays)
  • Zone ABC Fritid 1 läsår vardag 14-24 (Invalid during school holidays)
  • Zone ABC Fritid 1 läsår vardag 14-24 + helg 00-24 (Invalid during school holidays)
  • Zon ABC Fritid 1 läsår vardag 14-24 + helg/lov 00-24 (Valid during the autumn holiday, the sports break, the Christmas and the summer holidays)
  • Zon ABC Fritid jul-/sommarlov 00-24 (Only valid during the Christmas and the summer holidays)
  • Above leisure tickets are valid within zones ABC.
  • The ticket cannot be used to cover a part of SJ or Vy ticket cost.
  • While traveling by vehicles unequipped with our card readers, students need to be able to show a certificate of validity. A certificate of validity can be obtained from a Västtrafik shop or an agent.

  • School year start ticket
  • Temporary school card (7 and 12 days)
  • Ticket for the home trip
  • School practice ticket (7 days)

School year start ticket

  • With a School year start ticket students can travel during the first weeks of the semester pending the issuing of a new card. The card does not require the school’s stamp to be valid, but the backside should be filled in.
  • Student can travel on non-holiday weekdays between 04:00 and 19:00 during the period August 10 – September 15.
  • This ticket gives the possibility to travel at the beginning of the academic year to freshman students of upper secondary school without a valid School card from the previous semester.
  • The card is not year-specific and can be used during the respective period of the next academic year.
  • School ticket at the start of the academic year is valid for zones ABC.
  • The ticket cannot be used to cover a part of SJ or Vy ticket cost.

Temporary school card (7 and 12 dagar)

  • With a Temporary school card, students can travel to and from school pending the issuing of a ticket for the new academic year, as long as the previous ticket has been replaced in the School Portal. The card requires the school’s stamp to be valid.
  • Upon receiving a new School year ticket, students must hand over their temporary travel documents.
  • Temporary school card is valid for the same zone as the student’s School year start ticket.

Ticket for the home trip

  • Ticket for the home trip gives primary school students the possibility to travel home if they forget their School year ticket. It functions as a single ticket.
  • Students can travel on non-holiday weekdays between 04:00 and 19:00.
  • Upper secondary school students are responsible for having a valid travel document on their trips to and from school.
  • Ticket for the home trip is valid for the same zone as the student’s School year ticket.

School practice ticket (7 days)

  • With a School practice ticket (7 days), students can travel to their place of practice or a study visit.
  • Students can travel without any time slot limitations for seven days on both weekdays and weekends, any time of the year.
  • The ticket has a flexible start date and is valid for seven days. 
  • School practice ticket is valid for trips in the adjacent counties (Østfold, Värmland, Örebro, Jönköping and Halland). 
  • School practice ticket is valid for Öresundståg.
  • While traveling by vehicles unequipped with our card readers, students need to be able to show a certificate of validity. A certificate of validity can be obtained from a Västtrafik shop or an agent.   

Age limit

With an active School card for the academic year, the student can travel the entire spring semester for the year the student turns 20. Exceptions are made to students in "Upper secondary school for pupils with intellectual disability", who can travel on an active "School year ticket" the entire spring term the year the student turns 21. Note: Even a student younger than 7 years old who travels without adult company needs a school card.

Routine for if the student forgot their School card:

  • Compulsory school students who have forgotten their school card at home are still able to travel to school free of charge. The student should be encouraged to contact the school's office or the teacher to get a ticket for their return trip.
  • Upper secondary school (gymnasiet) students must always pay for their trip themselves.
  • With a Ticket for the return trip, the student who attends compulsory school can travel home from school if the student has forgotten their ticket. The card corresponds to a one-way ticket.
  • If the student attends upper secondary school (gymnasiet), the student is responsible for having a valid travel pass when traveling to and from school.
  • The ticket for the return journey is valid in the same zone as the student's School ticket at the start of the school year. The card needs a stamp from the school to be valid and the card is valid on weekdays between 04-19.

Ordering and delivery

You can place new orders for school cards for the current academic year until May 31. From May 15 orders for the upcoming academic year can be placed.

Anonymous cards

It is you who determines which information will be printed on the cards. The only information required by Västtrafik is the indication of the ticket type (zone). If you leave the card without any information, the card will be anonymous. Anonymous cards are acceptable during eventual ticket controls.

  • School cards require 6 working days to be produced.
  • Exceptions apply for orders exceeding 5,000 cards, the production time is then 11 working days.
  • Please note that mail delivery time also applies.
  • During summer and vacation the production times may be longer.

School year tickets will be delivered to the school/municipality or directly to the student’s home.

In the case of delivery to the school or municipality, orders with less than eleven school cards are shipped by post, and orders containing more than eleven school cards are delivered as business packages.

For delivery to the student’s home, the administrator must accept direct dispatch at the respective unit.

The delivery method is determined individually for each order.

Items from the list of complementary school card products are delivered to the school or municipality.

Invoicing and management

  • Västtrafik invoices customers monthly to reduce the need for subsequent cost correction.
  • Each invoice is sent monthly; the academic year is divided into nine months.
  • The first invoice is sent out at the beginning of September and charges the September payment for the active School year tickets.
  • October – May invoices include complementary orders from the previous month in addition to the active school cards for the current month.

School cards handout

The guide for your school card (pdf in Swedish) is a list of instructions that can be printed out for students.

School card is personal and cannot be lent. The best practice for eventual control checks is to have the student’s name indicated on the backside of the card.

Active school cards

You can find and manage the active school card on the start page of the School Portal under ”Students and cards”. Note that to find the right card you need to choose the unit and academic year for which the order was made.

School card termination

The active School year tickets can be terminated on School Portal:

You can find the termination function for School year tickets directly on the start page.

After choosing the Terminate button under Manage existing tickets you can type in the card number (15 digits) and opt for terminating the specified card.

Alternatively:

Search for the card under the tab ”Students” and then click on the magnifying glass icon under ”Manage”.

Choose ”Cards and tickets”

Choose to terminate the specified card by clicking on the trash bin icon.

When you terminate a specific School year ticket, you inactivate all products related to it. For example, if there is a School year ticket with a Leisure ticket addon, both products get blocked when you choose to terminate the card.

School ticket replacement

On School Portal, you can easily block and replace a School year ticket.

The replacement function can be found directly on the start page.

After clicking on the ”Replace” button under ”Manage existing tickets”, you can type in the card number (15 digits) and opt for terminating the specified card.

Search for the card under the tab ”Students and cards”

Click on the magnifying glass icon under Manage.

Choose "Cards and tickets"

Choose to replace the specified card by clicking on the arrows.

When you replace the card, you have three options to choose from:

Defective school card

A defective card is a card that has been damaged from the day of release and could never be stamped. Replacing defective school cards is free of charge. When you replace a defective school card, a Temporary school card is sent without any additional cost to the unit registered as the recipient on School Portal.

Lost or stolen school card

A lost or stolen card is a card that was handed out to a student but has gone missing since. It costs 60 crowns to replace a lost or stolen school card.

Damaged school card

A damaged school card is a card that sustained damages after being handed out to a student. It costs 60 crowns to replace a damaged school card.

Lost or stolen card

A student must contact school office if the card gets lost or stolen. The student can get a school card Temporary for seven or twelve days pending the issuing of a new card. The school or municipality is responsible for providing Temporary school cards.

If a primary school student loses the school card or it gets stolen, the first round trip can be taken without a valid travel document. If an upper secondary school student loses the school card or it gets stolen, the trip to and from school is paid for by the student.

Damaged school card

A student must contact the school office in case of a school card malfunction. The student can get a school card Temporary valid for seven or twelve days pending the issuing of a new school card. The school or municipality is responsible for providing the school cards Temporary.

Primary school students can take the first round trip without a valid travel document in case of a school card damage. Upper secondary school students with damaged school cards are responsible for paying for their trips to and from school.

Forgotten school card

If a primary school student leaves the school card at home, the first trip to and from school can be taken without a valid travel document. If the school card is left at home, a student can contact the school office and get a single ticket for the journey home.

If an upper secondary student forgets the school card, the student is responsible for paying for the trip to and from school.

Used school cards

Used school cards from the previous academic year are to be recycled as plastic.

School year ticket

  • School year ticket is valid during the autumn semester from August 10 to December 23 and the spring semester January 7 – June 18.
  • School year ticket is also valid during the first week of the following semester from August 10 to September 15.
  • School year ticket is active during the autumn holiday, sports break and the Easter holiday.

Academic year

  • You can place an order for the upcoming academic year as of May 15.
  • You have until May 31 to place orders for the current academic year.

Billing

  • The academic year is divided into nine months and invoices are sent September through May.
  • In June, the invoice includes only additional orders for the previous month.
